How to Make a Retouched Background in Photoshop | Adobe Creative Cloud

Create a studio fashion shoot from your home then use selection tools and masking to create fun, professional-studio style. Featured artist: Diane Villadsen. Check out more of her work here: https://www.dvilladsenphotography.com/

Start from scratch, or download practice files [https://adobe.ly/2EK4sS9] for a head start. Steps below.

Fill the Gaps:

1. Open the image from the practice files (File – Open).
2. Select the Lasso (L) tool and drag to select the gap on the left, making sure to select a portion of the blue backdrop.
3. Right-click on the selection and choose Fill.
4. Choose Content-Aware. Click OK.

Tip: Once Photoshop analyzes the photo, it fills in the selected areas with the blue from the studio backdrop.

5. Use the Lasso tool to select the gap on the right and use Content-Aware Fill to blend it with the blue backdrop.

Tip: After you select the gap on the left, you can hold the Shift key as you use the Lasso tool to select the gap on the right.

Isolate the Subjects:

1. Click on the image to disable the selection.
2. With the Lasso tool still selected, choose Select and Mask from the Options bar at the top.
3. In the Select and Mask workspace, choose Select Subject.

Note: Photoshop selecs the subject and applies a red overlay to most of the background.

4. Select the Refine Edge Brush tool.
5. Brush around the model’s hair and the larger remaining areas of background.
6. At the bottom of the Properties panel in the Select and Mask workspace, choose to Output to: New Layer. Click OK.

Add a Refining Layer

1. Click Create a new layer from the Layers (Window – Layers) panel.
2. Move the new blank layer to the middle of the layer stack.
3. Click the eye icon on the original Models layer to make it visible.
4. Choose the Eyedropper (I) tool to select a teal color from the backdrop (e.g., #7cb3b5).
5. Make sure the new blank layer is selected.
6. Select the Brush (B) tool, set it to a large soft round tip, and adjust the Opacity and Flow (we used 40% and 50%).
7. Brush around the areas of the background to smooth out the wrinkles in the blue cloth while preserving the natural shadows of the models and the cat.

That’s it!
