Das Program wurde erstmals 1995 in einer veröffentlichen Testversion vorgestellt.
1996 kam dann nach und nach Plug-In, Fabrkanäle und so weiter hinzu. Version 0.54.
Heute 2021 ist die Gimpentwicklung bei der Version 2.10.22 angelangt, sowie bei der Entwicklerversion 2.99.5, die in der stabilen Version 3.0 münden soll.
