How to Make a Spot Color Poster in Photoshop | Adobe Creative Cloud

Get everyone talking about your next gig with this punk rock inspired poster.

Start from scratch, or download the project file containing the sample assets
[ https://adobe.ly/3x6olcE ] for a head start. Steps below.

Prep your file:
1. Open Photoshop on your desktop.
2. Upload your band photo.
3. Click the lock icon on the Layers panel to start editing the photo.

Mask out the band:
1. Hold down the Object Selection tool and choose the Quick Selection tool.
2. Trace inside the band members to select each one.

Tip: Press Alt (Windows) or Option (macOS) as you trace to exclude areas included by mistake.

3. Click the mask button at the bottom of the Layers panel.
4. Click the Adjustment Layer button at the bottom of the Layers panel.
5. Choose Solid Color.
6. Set it to black
7. Drag the adjustment layer below the image layer.

Make it black and white:
1. Select the photo layer.
2. Click the Adjustment Layer button.
3. Choose Black & White.
4. Use the color sliders to fine-tune the effect.

Tip: We adjusted reds to 76 and blues to 89.

Add the spot color:
1. Click the Adjustment Layer button.
2. Choose Gradient Map.
3. Click the gradient thumbnail and double-click the white color stop.
4. Select your color. Tip: We used pink, #f37bc7.
5. Click Reverse on the Properties panel.

Highlight some details:
1. Click the mask thumbnail on the Gradient Map layer.
2. Select the Brush tool.
3. Paint with a black brush over the areas where you want to hide the new color.

Tip: Change the brush to white to add the color back as needed.

Separate the layers:
1. Use shift-click to select both adjustment layers.
2. Choose Create Clipping Mask from the flyout menu.

Add the type:
1. Select the Type tool.
2. Type in the details.
3. Play with color and size.

Tip: We used Chantal from Adobe Fonts for this poster.

Cut it out:
1. Click the mask thumbnail on the Color Fill layer.
2. Press Delete.
3. Select the Polygonal Lasso tool.
4. Draw a rough outline around the band members.
5. Click the Mask button on the Layers panel.

Make it a Smart Object:
1. Click the Adjustment Layer button.
2. Select Solid Color.
3. Set it to white.
4. Drag the white Color Fill layer below the black Color Fill layer.
5. Select all of the layers.
6. Choose Convert to Smart Object from the flyout menu.

Add some grit:
1. Select Filter – Filter Gallery from the top menu.
2. Choose Grain from the Texture folder.
3. Use the sliders to adjust to the desired look.

Tip: We used Intensity 21 and Contrast 41.
